Black Tot rum shares details of its new 2024 release

Black Tot Rum

Black Tot Rum, a brand based in London, has announced the details of its latest limited release — a Master Blender’s Reserve for 2024. The annual release uses the same blend for its base, but each year different additions are blended in to create a unique flavor experience.

“For this new release, we wanted to focus on the warmth and fruit of rums from Barbados, which has given us a foundation of juicy pineapple, lime and sweet melon,” said master blender Oliver Chilton.

The latest edition will be a run of 3,000 bottles, and will come in at 54.5% abv. It has been aged in both American and European oak casks, and boasts aromas of pineapple, lime, chili, and coconut. These tastes of Barbados are key to this release, as the brand highlights Barbados as the “cultural birthplace of rum.”

“I knew I wanted to highlight Barbados, and then bring in some of the older Jamaican blends that we created a few years back, for added intensity,” said Chilton. “We also used some deep, rich rums from Guyana and Trinidad, including the one from the closed Caroni distillery.”

Black Tot is known for high-end rums like its British Royal Navy Rum, but its Master Blender’s Reserve has been a popular series since it debut in 2020. A previous version, released last year, aimed to recreate original Navy rum using rum from Grenada.

The new 2024 version will sell for around $180 for a bottle of 700ml in size. It will be launched for sale around the world on July 1.

Celebrate National Daiquiri Day by enjoying this classic rum cocktail
Diplomático suggests a traditional or mango version of the Daiquiri
national daiquiri day diplomatico rum

Today, June 19, is the lesser known holiday of National Daiquiri Day. And while when you hear the word daiquiri your mind might go straight to sweet, fruity, slushy strawberry drinks casually knocked back on a beach, this is in fact a classic rum cocktail that's worth making at home to enjoy the flavors of rum.

With a simple combination of rum, lime juice, and sugar, this drink in its classic form has more in common with a gin gimlet than a strawberry slushie. And because of its simplicity, it's a great way to explore the nuances of different types of rum. So if you have a bottle of rum at the back of your home bar that you're not sure what to do with, or if you want to pick up a nice bottle of rum and try some experimenting with it, then the daiquiri is a great choice of cocktail to start with.

While rum is made everywhere, from Louisiana to the Philippines, its heart is in the Caribbean. This is where places like Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, Barbados, Cuba, and Jamaica have been crafting rum for centuries. And while we could spend a whole article explaining the intricacies of the various Caribbean rum hotbeds, today, we’re most interested in Jamaica.

When people talk about Jamaican rum, the first word that usually comes up is “funky”. Jamaican rums, while known for their bold, complex, rich profiles and notes of molasses, fruit, and gentle spices, they’re also known for fermented funky, lightly barnyard aromas and flavors.
