Here’s what critics are saying about ‘Joker: Folie a Deux’

The sequel is getting a more mixed response thank its predecessor.

The review embargo for Joker: Folie a Deux has lifted following the film’s premiere at the Venice Film Festival, which means we finally know what critics think about the sequel to the 2019 smash hit. The reviews are largely positive, but some suggest that the movie might not be quite as compelling as the first installment, and that it doesn’t have the same electrifying spine as its predecessor.

IGN gave the movie a 5/10 and wrote, “Despite the best efforts of Joaquin Phoenix, Lady Gaga, and an opening hour set in Arkham Asylum, Joker: Folie à Deux wastes its potential as a movie musical, a courtroom drama, and a sequel that has anything meaningful to say about or add to the first Joker.”

Indiewire, meanwhile, gave the movie a C-, writing “Needless to say, Folie à Deux does not give the people what they want. On the contrary, it actively courts the disappointment of its own fandom in order to articulate how cruelly Arthur is co-opted by the fantasies of the collective unconscious — lost in a dream that his followers want to have for themselves.”

Empire‘s review was more positive, giving it four stars, and described the movie by saying “As sweet and beguiling a musical romance as it’s possible to have between two murderous psychopaths. Its kooky approach won’t suit all stripes of comic-book fan, but it finds a strange, tragic hopefulness all of its own.”

The Wrap meanwhile, said that the Joker sequel was “the most interesting film about Arthur Fleck. It’s genuinely a little daring, genuinely a little challenging, and genuinely a little genuine.”

The Hollywood Reporter, on the other hand, didn’t much care for it. “For a movie running two-and-a-quarter hours, Folie à Deux feels narratively a little thin and at times dull,” they wrote.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the critical response to Folie à Deux is as divided as the first movie’s response was. The movie received plenty of awards acclaim in spite of that mixed reception, but it’s inclear whether this sequel will have the same kind of legacy with either audiences or critics.

Will there be a Twisters 2? What the cast has said
The cast have weighed in on whether they would return for a sequel.
Daisy Edgar-Jones as Kate, in Twisters directed by Lee Isaac Chung.

Following a remarkably impressive opening weekend and strong word of mouth, people around America clearly endorsed the idea of Twisters — even if there was no kiss. The movie, which is a sequel to the 1996 blockbuster Twister and follows a group of storm-chasers braving the tornadoes of Oklahoma, earned more than $80 million during its opening weekend and proved to be a remarkably good idea for a legacy sequel.

Now, following the success of this sequel, some are wondering whether we might be in for more Twisters sometime soon. Just because it took more than two decades to get one sequel to Twister doesn't necessarily mean we have to wait that long for the next installment. Here's what we know about whether we'll be getting a Twisters 2.
Will there be a Twisters 2?
Daisy Edgar-Jones, who stars as Kate in the sequel, said that she was "not sure" about doing a sequel. "They'd have to keep adding s's to the end of the word Twister," she joked to Yahoo! Entertainment.

What we know about Brad Pitt, Channing Tatum’s Isle of Man motorcycle race projects
isle of man tt

One of the deadliest motorcycle races in the world is getting a movie of its own. A film and docuseries about the Isle of Man TT race is coming soon courtesy of Channing Tatum and Brad Pitt's production companies. Free Association and Plan B Entertainment, along with Jason Keller, Entertainment 360’s Guymon Casady, Box to Box Films and Mediawan, are partnering on a docuseries called The Greatest Race on Earth, as well as a feature film package set to debut later this year.

The Isle of Man TT is one of the most famous and deadliest races in motorcycle racing. The race takes place on a small island nation in the Irish Sea and traces its heritage back to the early 1900s when road racing was forbidden in England. At the time, racers found refuge on the Isle of Man. A single lap takes more than 37 miles and features racers navigating the island's road systems. There have been more than 100 deaths in the race over the past 100 years, including five in 2022.
“We dare anyone to find more awe-inspiring people, or a more breathtakingly vibrant world than The Isle of Man TT. We’ve always been drawn to characters who push the edge of what’s possible, and this race is their Shangri-La. We’re deeply honored to be part of the creative dream team telling the story of this legendary event, and can’t wait to finally share this mythical sport we love with audiences all across the globe,” Tatum and Free Association’s Reid Carolin and Peter Kiernan said.
Production on The Greatest Race on Earth is set to begin this week and take place through the Isle of Man race in June. The screenplay for the film is now in development.

Everything we know about 28 Years Later: Release date, cast, and more
What's coming up in 28 Years Later? Here's what we know so far.
Cillian Murphy in 28 Days Later.

In 2002, 28 Days Later paved the way for a zombie revival that included The Walking Dead comic book series and the TV series, as well as countless imitators. For the first time in years, zombies were all the rage thanks to director Danny Boyle and screenwriter Alex Garland. That film was also one of the first breakout roles for Cillian Murphy, the reigning Best Actor-winner at the Oscars for his leading role in Oppenheimer. Murphy played Jim, a bicycle courier who woke up from a coma and discovered a world that he barely recognized.

There was a sequel, 28 Weeks Later, in 2007. But Boyle and Garland never got around to making 28 Months Later. But now, over two decades after the original film was released, 28 Years Later is finally happening, and it's coming to theaters next year.
