Hollywood has been trying to adapt Jonathan Franzen’s The Corrections since the book was first published more than 20 years ago. Now, CBS Studios is giving it a shot, and with some big star-power attached. According to reporting in Indiewire, Meryl Streep will star in an adaptation of the 2001 novel, which Franzen himself is adapting for television. The show does not yet have a network or streamer attached, but with Streep in a central role, it likely will soon.

The Corrections tells the story of three generations of a dysfunctional family from the middle of the century up through one final Christmas that they are all trying to spend together. The novel’s depiction of the strife and conflict at the heart of the family has earned it plenty of praise in the years since it was released, and Hollywood has been working to adapt it ever since.

The first attempt was a feature film that never got off the ground, and Marriage Story director also tried to adapt the novel for HBO with a cast that would have included Ewan McGregor, Chris Cooper, Dianne Wiest, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Rhys Ifans, and Greta Gerwig, among others. Baumbach got as far as actually filming part of a pilot, but that pilot was rejected, so the show never got off the ground.

Baumbach’s cast was certainly impressive, but he didn’t have any names as big as Streep. Given that star power and the fact that the author himself is adapting, it seems possible that this adaptation will actually get off the ground.

The remake of American Psycho has found its Patrick Bateman. Variety is reporting that Austin Butler has been cast in director Luca Guadagnino's reimagining of the Bret Easton Ellis, which was already adapted into a cult film starring Christian Bale in 2000.

Jacob Elordi was apparently also in the mix for the role, but Butler was ultimately chosen for the part. This new film will not be a remake of the 2000 film, but will instead go back to the original source material. The original 2000 film follows Patrick Bateman, a New York businessman whose nightlife involves killing people with an axe at the height of Reagans-era excess.

It might not have all the flash of a streaming service like Netflix, but Amazon Prime Video can command a pretty large audience. Variety is reporting that Cross, the series that adapts James Patterson's Alex Cross novels, has drawn 40 million viewers in the first 20 days of its release.

Prime Video says that those viewership numbers make Cross its third biggest series of the year, behind just the first season of Fallout and Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season 2. Amazon had previously reported that Fallout hit 65 million viewers in 16 days, and Rings of Power hit 40 million in 11 days, growing to 55 million over the course of a month. It's also the streamer's sixth biggest launch of all time over the course of 20 days, with 55% of the show's audience coming from outside of the United States. Germany, the U.K., Brazil, Canada, and Spain, in particular, are apparently seeing “outsized performance.”
