Just in time for Veterans Day, Frankfort, Kentucky’s J. Mattingly 1845 Distillery is releasing the fifth edition of its popular Combat Infantry Badge (CIB) Bourbon. The whiskey gets its name from the Combat Infantry Badges, which are awarded to Army Infantry and Special Forces soldiers with the rank of Colonel and below who were engaged in active ground combat during their military service.

It’s more than just a whiskey to honor combat veterans; it’s also made for a good cause. A portion of the sales for every bottle of this annual release is donated to military nonprofit charities. This year, the charity is Blue Skies for the Good Guys and Gals Warrier Foundation, which honors veterans, wounded soldiers, and their families.

The whiskey matured for five years using the brand’s proprietary double staving process, giving the whiskey more exposure to charred barrel staves than regular barrel aging. According to the distillery, the whiskey is filled with flavors like pie crust, dried apples, cinnamon roasted malt, vanilla beans, baking spices, prunes, and currents. The finish is a warming, extended mix of caramel and stone fruit.

“The Mattingly family has several family members who are current or former military service personnel, as well as some of our team members we work with every day at the Distillery,” Harry Richart, president of J. Mattingly 1845 Distillery, said in a press release. “It’s really important for us to give back to our community and we’re honored we have such great fans of our products which allows us to give back a portion of our sales from some of our special releases to very worthy causes.”

When it comes to hard-to-find, highly sought-after, expensive bourbons, Van Winkle is the most well-known name. There are a variety of reasons why this whiskey is so beloved.

This Buffalo Trace-produced whiskey is aged longer than most bourbons on the market and is known for its complex flavor profile. It’s only released in limited quantities to select retailers where its price is inflated by demand. People treat Van Winkle whiskeys like they are an investment on par with comic books, stamps, and rare art. That said, it should come as no surprise that a bottle of Van Winkle set the record for the most expensive bourbon ever auctioned.

Wyoming Whiskey is releasing a new whiskey for Grizzly 399
Wyoming Whiskey Queen of the Tetons was made for a special reason
Wyoming Whiskey

If you read the label for Wyoming Whiskey’s newest expression, you might wonder who the “Queen of the Tetons” is. Well, that’s kind of a sad story as the aforementioned queen wasn’t a member of some mountainous royal family but a beloved bear called Grizzly 399 that was struck and killed by a car near Grand Teton National Park in October. This whiskey was made to pay tribute to the popular Wyoming icon.

You probably saw headlines about the death of Grizzly 399, as it wasn’t just any bear. A well-known bear in the Yellowstone ecosystem for photographers and tourists, she was a towering seven feet tall and weighed over 400 pounds. At the time of her death, she was twenty-eight years old, having raised at least eighteen cubs.
