While we’ve seen a good number of significant recalls as of late, none compare to the infamous Takata airbag recall, which has been called “the largest and most complex safety recall in U.S. history” by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. A total of 67 million airbags have been recalled, spanning 42 million separate vehicles from 34 different brands and 19 separate auto manufacturers.

According to the NHTSA, the Takata airbag problem has caused 27 fatalities and over 400 separate injuries. While the safety administration says that about 88 percent of the airbags in question have been either replaced or repaired, that still leaves a significant number of cars, along with their drivers and passengers on the road, still at risk of injury and potentially death.

NASCAR MAVERICKS: new book celebrates the revolutionaries of stock car racing
Understand the spirit of NASCAR through tales of the sport's legends
NASCAR Mavericks bookcover.

The National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing, or NASCAR, is a highly organized motorsports organization that sanctions national racing series and races in the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Brazil, and Europe. Race car driver Bill France launched NASCAR in 1948 to promote the sport and to bring order with rules and regulations.

Since the early years, when stock car racing included former moonshine drivers from the U.S. South, NASCAR has always attracted and featured colorful personalities. On November 12, 2024, Motorbooks is publishing NASCAR MAVERICKS: The Rebels and Racers Who Revolutionized Stock Car Racing by H.A. Branham and Holly Cain. This new book tells the stories of more than 60 of NASCAR's free-spirited personalities.
Why NASCAR MAVERICKS matters
Tales of NASCAR drivers' exploits are entertaining, but the book's compilation of stories, photographs, and history captures the independence, free-spiritedness, and will of the personalities that have characterized NASCAR since its beginning.
What the book contains
Beginning with a story about "Big Bill" France Sr., NASCAR historian H.A. Branham and motorsports journalist Holly Cain tell the tales of NASCAR drivers, crews, and other characters such as Smokey Yunick, Curtis Turner, Louise Smith, Janet Guthrie, and Wendell Scott. The list also includes stories about Brian France, the Busch Brothers, Michael Jordan’s 23XI Racing team, and Jimmie Johnson’s longtime crew chief, Chad Knaus.

F1 United States Grand Prix Practice 1 Results: whose upgrades made a difference
Windy conditions, a new track surface, and upgrades testing saw many cars missing corners on the sole USGP practice session.
Circuit of the Americas race track in Austin, Texas.

Today's F1 race schedule saw the first and only free practice session for the 2024 United States Grand Prix at the Circuit of the Americas (COTA) in Austin, Texas. Most Grand Prix weekends include three practice sessions (FP1, FP2, and FP3) for teams to check out the weekly race car upgrades on the track. The USGP, is one of six Sprint weekends of the 24-week schedule, which means instead of FP2 and FP3, the team have a Sprint Qualifying session and the Sprint race itself.

A Sprint race allows drivers to earn extra Championship points (as much as 8 points for the winner) for themselves and their teams. Still, the marginally more leisurely pace of normal race weekends provides more opportunities for teams to adjust and tweak their cars.  This weekend's race is also notable because it follows a three-week break since the last race, the Singapore Grand Prix. There were no races, but most teams used the times to make the last likely major upgrades of the season, with six races left in the 2024 season.

Formula E Season 11 race schedule finalized, will debut new race cars
Faster than F1 cars, the new Gen3 Evo cars will also have AWD
The ABB FIA Formula E 2024-25 calendar starts with a race at the Sambadrome in Sao Paulo, Brazil

The ABB FIA Formula E World Championship calendar for Season 11 has just been finalized following the FIA's World Motor Sport Council's October meeting. The 2024/25 schedule will see 11 teams of two drivers each compete in 16 races in ten cities, starting December 7 in Sao Paulo, Brazil, and ending in London, England, on July 27. Season 11 is also the new Gen3 Evo car, the fastest accelerating FIA single-seat race car ever and 30% faster than current Formula 1 cars.
Why Formula E is such a big deal

Formula E is the only FIA motorsports championship that has created zero emissions with its race cars starting with its first season. All-electric race cars are the signature environmentally conscious elements of Formula E racing, but the Championship also focuses on carbon neutral or better in all of its operations, including transporting fans to and from stadiums.
