We are firm believers here at The Manual that some of the best brands out there are the smaller, lesser known brands that stand by the ideas that handmade, American-made products tend to stand the test of time.
We’d like to introduce you to a leather goods company – Maxx & Unicorn, or M&U Co. for short. The company designs artful products for everyday use – and of course made here in the USA. Their items are manufactured locally – and created from the finest, domestically sourced materials.
It all started with a wallet back in 2007 – and although the item has gone through a few changes stylistically, there has been no change to the manufacturing process. Assembled by hand in their Brooklyn studio and made from American tanned bridle leather that has been vegetable dyed in Pennsylvania at a tannery that has been around since the early 19th century. Oil and wax create a smooth and durable finish on the leather goods. M&U Co. stands by their products 100 percent – so much so that if you need refinishing, re-waxing, or repairing – they’ll do it. And if it can’t be fixed – they’ll replace it.
The wallets come in two styles: folded or hand-stitched. If you are the type of person who likes to know how things are made, make sure to check out M&U’s blog where they take you behind the scenes – from the factories to the first stitches. You can take a look here.
M&U Co. also has an interesting assortment of wooden trays made from sustainably harvested American hardwoods. The website also has a cool selection of brass key rings, and money clips that would make a great gift.
