The Decemberists - What a Terrible World coverIn the music video for “Make You Better,” the lead single from The Decemberists’ new album, What a Terrible World, What a Beautiful WorldParks & Recreation‘s Nick Offerman portrays a TV host in the middle of a fraught relationship with one of his coworkers. This change in role for Offerman, from rugged Ron Swanson to the vulnerable Franz, is indicative of a larger change in The Decemberists’ tone on their new album.

What a Terrible World… is more direct than the band’s older catalogue. “Make You Better” deals plainly and openly with the burdens lovers place on one another, while tracks like “12/17/12” feature vocalist Colin Meloy singing on his own experiences rather than narrating stories about fictional/mythical characters (cf. The Hazards of Love and The Táin).

That said, and even considering the band’s shift in lyrical style, What a Terrible World… is unmistakably a Decemberists album. “The Singer Addresses His Audience” includes sly references to the listener as it takes a serious look at issues of fame and artistry, and in another life “Philomena” could have been the most suggestive track The Hollies ever recorded.

Meloy’s use of more personal lyrics is a rejuvenating move for the band. What a Terrible World… points toward a new way forward for The Decemberists. The band is exploring new lyrical territory as well as digging further into its roots and inspirations.

What a Terrible World, What a Beautiful World came out last Tuesday, January 20th, on Capitol Records and is available on Amazon, The Decemberists’ official site, and iTunes.

Disney is adding six more Monday Night Football games to ABC’s fall schedule
The move will almost undoubtedly improve ABC's ratings during those games
ESPN Monday Night Football Logo

Football is, by a pretty wide margin, the most popular sport in America. It's perhaps unsurprising, then, that Disney wants to get its Monday Night Football broadcasts in front of as many sets of eyes as possible, which is why Variety is now reporting that the company intends to simulcast six Monday Night Football games on both ABC and ESPN.

These six new games are in addition to eight regular and post-season games that were already expected to air on the network. The new games will air on ABC on October 14 and 21; November 4, 18 and 25; and December 23. The new games are set to jettison Celebrity Wheel of Fortune and other Monday night programming from ABC, and are almost guaranteed to get better ratings than those other shows would have.

Nicole Kidman is reuniting with the ‘Big Little Lies’ author for a new series
It's not clear yet whether Kidman will star in the show or just produce it.
Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman in Big Little Lies.

Few actresses have taken the transition to television more in stride than Nicole Kidman. Although she was a movie star for decades, Nicole is now all over the small screen after first jumping over with Big Little Lies. Now, the actress has announced her latest small screen project, an adaptation of Liane Moriarty's Here One Moment.

Moriarty's adaptations have been all over Netflix in recent years, including Big Little Lies, Apples Never Fall, and Nine Perfect Strangers, among others. Kidman has worked on two other Moriarty adaptations, but on this one, it isn't yet clear whether she will also have a role on camera or not. For now, she is just producing the adaptation along with Per Saari, as well as Made Up Stories’ Bruna Papandrea and Steve Hutensky, according to Deadline. It's worth noting, though, that Kidman has ended up starring in the past two Moriarty adaptations that she was a part of.

Timothee Chalamet and ‘The Nanny’ star Fran Drescher are teaming up for a new movie
The movie is set in the world of 1950s ping pong, whatever that might mean.
Timothee Chalamet in Lady Bird

Few actors have been more successful over the past half-decade than Timothee Chalamet. The actor has proven himself across a wide variety of projects and has managed to anchor the remarkably successful Dune franchise. Timothee is also about to play Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown, which could get him some attention from awards voters.

His next project, though, is a collaboration with Josh Safdie, one of the directors behind Uncut Gems and Good Time. The movie, which is called Marty Supreme, also stars Fran Drescher, the current president of SAG and the former star of The Nanny, and Gwyneth Paltrow. While plot details are scant, Variety has reported that the film is a "fictional work set in the world of 1950s ping pong culture.”
