When you think of Panerai, there is one design that comes to mind. Big stainless steel case, protruding crown guard, and of course a sandwich black dial, Panerai does make other watches. Their Radiomir line, the 1940s inspired rounded square case shape, is just as classic as the bulkier Luminor. Simple and classic, this case shape is a favorite of mine. It does not scream Panerai, but it certainly says class.
Panerai has been rolling out new Radiomir pieces as of late and this last one has caught my eye; the Panerai PAM 655 3 day Automatic. This watch is everything that is not common Panerai. At only 42mm in diameter, this steel case is streamlined for dress but substantial enough for casual. A white dial with faux patina markers and black arabic numerals makes for a killer contrast. Fit with a khaki suede band, this piece looks like its on safari. Beneath the white dial lies Panerai’s in-house 3 day power reserve automatic movement. The off-center tungsten rotor can be seen through the exhibition case back.
This color contrast and case shape is not typical Panerai, but it certainly stands out. Brands that have beaten the dead horse with their flagship design tend to fade over time. Panerai is giving it their best shot at adapting and offering their loyal collectors new and interesting timepieces. The PAM 655 is a perfect example of that. There is still plenty of Panerai DNA in this piece. White dial Panerais get a bad rap, but this one will help change that.
