Last week, our resident spirit guide, Sam Slaughter, was invited to the historic Liederkranz in New York City to help craft some cocktails with Empire Spirits Private Club Vodka for their upcoming sponsorship of the Lincoln Center Theater’s 2016 season. Check out his recap on prepping and making the cocktails and working with the brand below, as well as a couple of his recipes.

When I first received the Private Club vodka, I was excited. I’d grown up in the shadow of New York City and this was purported to be the vodka equivalent of the city that never sleeps. It was smooth and subtle upon first taste and I knew that it’d make for some good, Empire State-themed cocktails.

The cocktails had to be simple, but flavorful, while still evoking that exclusive mindset that comes with the best of the best in The City. I started by playing with derivations of classics. The Empire Cosmo is, naturally, a cosmopolitan, but with raspberry as a substitute for the typical cranberry. The raspberry flavor is a little sweeter, a little richer, a little more fitting of the Big City lifestyle. The lemon compliments the raspberry, making it a perfect match of classic and contemporary.

In the end, I met with David Stewart Hudson and Philipp Haberbauer, of Empire Spirits 1792, to test the cocktails at the historic Liederkranz Club, just across the street from Central Park. With the perfectly 1950’s cocktail bar as our backdrop, we crafted the drinks, testing and tweaking until we were satisfied.

What we came up with, again, was a blend of old and new. Simplicity and elegance, ease and class. The drinks all evoke not only the New York City of yesteryear, but the delicious potential of the coming year.

Tequila and coffee make the perfect pair in these seasonal cocktails
How to combine these two powerful flavors into one drink

If you love a cup of coffee in the morning, and you love a cocktail in the evening, then why not combine the two into a late-night caffeinated treat? Coffee cocktails are having something of a moment, spurred on by the enormous popularity of the Espresso Martini. But many variations of the Espresso Martini have upped the syrups used, and many of the drinks inspired by this tend toward being sweet. And while there's nothing wrong with a rich, creamy dessert cocktail, that isn't the only way to make use of coffee flavors in your drinks.

As well as fitting with cream and caramel, coffee also goes well with more bracing, bitter flavors. It's often overlooked now, but the Irish Coffee is a classic for combining the hearty bitterness of black coffee with the fruity depths of Irish whiskey. And another spirit which pairs extremely well with coffee is tequila, especially those tequilas which lean toward smokey or savory agave flavors. The darkness of coffee and the mineral and floral notes of a tequila set each other off extremely well.

Tequila is a favorite spirit for drinks of all kinds, from college-era slammers to fun and fruity margaritas. But as drinkers have become more interested in tequila over the last decade, a new set of high-end tequila brands have arisen to show the best that this spirit can be, in terms of artisanal production and elegant presentation. If you do treat yourself to some high end tequila, though, what's the best way to drink it?

Many fine tequilas are great for sipping, but they can also be used in elevated cocktails. Rather than bold flavors of salt, lemon, and lime though, these cocktails tend to be more subtle and nuanced, to give the flavors of the tequila a chance to shine. These cocktails from 1800 Tequila are perfect for showing off the best of your high-end bottles.
