Ceramic bezels have become the expected on sport watches. Rolex and Omega lead the pack with their Cerachrom and Liquid Metal bezels debuting years ago. The ceramic bezels are more durable and simply better looking. Other brands have followed suit and now aluminum bezels are just not cutting it anymore. Breitling has joined the pack with their own ceramic bezel piece, The Breitling Superocean 44 Special.
This submariner-esque black steel piece stands at a prominent 44mm in diameter. The black ceramic divers bezel on the black steel case makes for a contrasting black on black look. The shiny ceramic finish and mate black case make the piece more than just a black watch. The dial boasts large SuperLuminova markers and hands for extra legibility. A GMT complication adds some flair to this dial as well, all accompanied by the applied Breitling wings in the center. A rubber strap and black steel buckle finish off this sport diver.
It seems Breitling has created a close competitor to the Rolex Deep Sea Sea Dweller. With a similar diameter and look along with the ceramic bezel, Breitling offers a clean yet bulky sport piece. The black case, rubber strap, and of course price point set them apart. Ascetically, a ceramic bezel makes a huge difference. Detailed finishes, materials and complication are what make each timepiece unique. Look for the Superocean 44 Special with an MSRP just short of $5,000.
