You may have heard that Budweiser is re-branding its iconic cans this election year to say “America” instead of boring old “Budweiser.” While there are plenty of jokes to be made at a Belgian-owned mega corporation trying to hone-in on the United States’ patriotic fervor, instead it’s my pleasure to point you toward some authentically American brews to drink this Flag Day or any time you need to inspire a rousing chant of “USA! USA! USA!”
Anchor Liberty
One of the grandfathers of the current American craft beer movement, Anchor celebrates the best of the land of the free with Liberty. This ale was originally brewed to recognize the bicentennial of Paul Revere’s historic ride. The hopping profile and malt backbone makes Liberty the first American-brewed IPA after prohibition, first crafted in 1975.
Service Old Guard
A biere de garde style ale, Old Guard salutes the 3rd U.S. Infantry. This army unit has the distinction of being the official escort to the President and maintaining watch over the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Paying homage to our military men and women is nothing new to Service Brewing Co, which was founded by a US Army veteran. The bold yeast profile and subtle spicing make Old Guard a delicious spring seasonal.
RJ Rockers Patriot Pale
Like Service, a wartime veteran also founded this South Carolina brewery. The big Centennial and Cascade hops in RJ Rockers Patriot Pale blend with the malty caramel base to impart notes of lemon and biscuit for a crisp refreshing brew.
New Holland Pilgrim’s Dole
Where would the USA be without pilgrims? A tip of the buckle-banded hat to those pioneers is offered with this wheat wine stunner. The twelve percent alcohol by volume ensures a little bit of New Holland Pilgrim’s Dole will go a long way.
These four beers are only a taste of the American craft ales that recognize the brewers’ love of country. Whenever you buy a beer from a small batch producer in the US, you’re doing a patriotic duty. So go forth and celebrate the Stars and Stripes with locally made beer.
