“I really love doing fall collections,” began Derrick. “I love all the textures of fall—the sweaters, the wool, the layering—and try to incorporate those aesthetics into my designs.”

“In this particular collection, we played with textures by mixing soft suedes with our signature polished leathers,” he continued. “This imbues our footwear with a certain versatility, which makes it easy to transition any pair from a casual to formal setting.”

This combination of materials is best exemplified by the line’s rugged Pearson boot with black leather and black suede accents ($498), the elegant Theo dress boot with brown leather and navy suede ($498) and the Blake Cognac, a refined work boot with burnished cognac leather and flint suede ($450).

The line also features dozens of other highly wearable designs, including several lace-up dress shoes ($325-$498), sophisticated slip ons ($325-$498) and playful sneakers ($295-$398).

Each pair is constructed with high-quality natural materials (first choice select Italian hand-cut leather) and incorporates the latest in comfort technology, which makes the shoes weather-proof and extra supportive.

“While the designs might appear delicate at first, they’re actually incredibly durable,” Derrick explained. “These are shoes that are built to withstand the elements and last for several seasons.”

“I try to create a lifestyle collection for my customer, one that’ll take him from casual outings, to business meetings all the way to formal gatherings,” he concluded. “Here, he’s got options for every aspect of his life.”

In addition to its gorgeous selection of boots and shoes, To Boot’s fall collection also features a line of stylish socks in a variety of patterns and solid colors. Each pair retails for $30.

The Best Waterproof Boots for Men Tackling All Weather
Forsake Range High Waterproof Boots

Winter and fall are wonderful for a whole mess of reasons. However, footwear isn’t one of them. No matter how much designers may try to class it up, it’s inevitable that waterproof boots are going to be heavy, clunky, and cumbersome. They sort of have to be, if they’re going to keep the elements out.

Take it from someone who has weathered some of the harshest climatic conditions the United States can dish out: when it comes to winter footwear, the key is to embrace function over form. Pack away your best suede oxfords, your canvas slip-ons, and even your bespoke leather boots until May, and find yourself a tough pair of shit-kickers built from natural rubber, Gore-Tex, and pure grit. They may not be stylish, but boy, will they make you feel like a badass. Which, if you didn’t know, is also the best way to keep warm.

With Its New Men’s Line, Rothy’s Lets You Finally Live in Your Shoes
rothys mens shoe line feature 0

Lavion Gibson, director of product design for Rothy’s
, remembers what it was like in those early days of the sneakerhead boom. “I grew up keeping my sneakers as crisp as possible,” the 34-year-old tells The Manual. Walking without creasing one’s shoes is a learned skill, but even more valuable is the DIY triage it takes to care for a scuff: Pull out your toothbrush, soap, and water. Take the laces out, clean the soles, and then let them air-dry. It was a meticulous process only compounded by his habit of buying a new pair every two weeks.

Gibson, from his office in San Francisco and appearing onscreen with Senior Vice President of Men’s Chris Hull, 45, laughs at the memory. Hull laughs, too, as on Monday, May 20, the pair saw the company’s first two men’s shoes launch. The joke is, in part, the intensity that comes with core shoe culture. But the other part is that with its release, Rothy's has allowed the fashion-forward man to have his cake and eat it, too. Phrased another way, the days of meticulous shoe care are a thing of the past, replaced with a regular washing machine and about an hour or two of time.
