As the “sneakerboot” continues its ascent, more outdoor companies are working with established fashion brands to create the ideal pair of high-tops that can do the dirty work on the trail, then hit the bar right after.
Streetwear label Publish and outdoors outfitter The North Face have collaborated on a go-anywhere shoe line they’re calling “Midnight in Antarctica”.
According to Publish brand director Alex James, the collaboration takes inspiration from the landscapes of the barren polar cap. The dark blue and black of the shoes definitely pays homage to those glacial colors. The series takes Publish’s minimalist style coupled with The North Face’s reputation and combines it into a lineup that serves just about any purpose.
You have three options: A mule slipper, a mid street boot, and a full hiking boot. Each underwent the same rigorous durability testing that all North Face products do, so they’ll stand up to daily use – on the mountain or in the city. They also all share a similar moisture barrier and insulation setup, so your feet stay dry and warm throughout the day.
For casual fans, the Traction Mule is the perfect lazy Sunday styler. The slip-on is lightweight and compressible, while being good for the environment. Both its upper and outsole are made from recycled materials rebuilt for durability.
Next, Publish dressed up North Face’s old-school Back To Berkeley boot in a handsome black and blue that complements the white Winter Grip rubber outsole, just a step down from its hiking sibling.
Lastly, the most aggressive of the three is Publish’s take on The North Face’s Ultra Extreme II GTX. It features extra stability in the heel and construction as well as a special Vibram trek outsole for traction.
Overall, the collaboration represents an upgrade in everyday footwear, while showcasing the progressive thinking of two apparel leaders in their respective worlds. “Being able to work with The North Face, we were able to utilize technology like never before,” James says. “The final product is something really special.”
