Top 10 Cigars of 2018 According to ‘Cigar Aficionado’

Since 1992, Cigar Aficionado has been the go-to guide for all things tobacco, which is why we pay attention when the magazine releases its picks for the top 10 cigars of the year.

“Each and every cigar that made it to the top 25 is truly outstanding — with an impressive level of artistry, build quality and craftsmanship — and their producers should be proud,” said Marvin R. Shanken, editor and publisher of Cigar Aficionado in 2018. “We are thrilled to present these cigars, which we are sure our readers will thoroughly enjoy.”

To reach the top 25 list, Cigar Aficionado‘s tasting panel took the highest rated cigars from the publication throughout the year and subjected them to another round of blind taste testing. From there, they continued to whittle down the list of only the best cigars, round after blind round, until they arrived at the top 25 cigars.

Picture this. You're sailing the high seas when you come upon an alien land. After exploring the shore, you meet locals who are smoking some rather suspect leaves. The aroma and the smells they give off are enticing. Delicious, toasty scents reminiscent of a dessert or well-cooked meal. You've just encountered some of the earliest cigars ever created.

That's sort of how it went down. Forgive me, for I am not a historian. Therefore, I do not claim anything I'm sharing here to be a proven fact outside of the references I've used. However, I figured it would be a neat and interesting idea to explore the true history of cigars and tobacco.

Cuban cigars are often hailed as the forbidden fruit. Regardless of how you feel about them, they're highly coveted and incredibly popular in the cigar community -- especially among older crowds -- and they're a major conversation piece. But, in simple terms, they're illegal. First deemed so in 1962 because of the U.S. and Cuban embargo, as put in place by John F. Kennedy; it's pretty much been that way since.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned about the cigar community, from big and small companies to influencers and the average enjoyer, it’s wonderful to be a part of. I forgive you, dear reader, if you have been led to believe otherwise. For the reality is we are a brazen lot, wilfully enjoying an activity that has long been said to cause various health issues. Many cigar smokers on social media are outspoken, as well, often with clashing beliefs and sometimes even questionable politics. And let’s be honest, cigars and tobacco are most definitely a vice, much like alcohol.

Although this community stands out, it's a place where we embrace our shared love for an activity that has long been misunderstood. But allow me to explain why I’m sharing this and why it matters.
