Patrón Tequila Teams Up with Fever-Tree for New Citrus Tonic

As cocktails like the highball and other long drinks continue to rise in popularity, more companies are exploring the ways that best show off their products in that format. Half of the collaboration we’re about to talk about, Fever-Tree, has got it down pat — the brand is, after all, one of the top mixers on the market right now. For the other half, we have Patrón Tequila — need we say more?

While great on its own, Patrón is also delicious in a variety of drinks, including a tequila and tonic, which is why the two companies came together to develop a tonic water that would pair perfectly with the spirit.

The new product, Fever-Tree Citrus Tonic, uses specially sourced ingredients that work to balance the citrus and pepper notes of Patrón with the bittersweet flavors of the tonic water. To find the elements that would highlight those flavors, a team traveled to Colima and Michoacán for the best Key limes and Tahitian limes. Next, the crew traveled to Veracruz for the best tangerines. Finally, they went to Yucatán, where they discovered the ideal bitter oranges to blend with Fever-Tree’s signature quinine.

We have to say, being a part of a flavor-finding team doesn’t sound like a terrible job. At all. Hey, Fever-Tree, if you ever need some new blood on that team, you know where to find us.

According to Fever-Tree North American CEO Charles Gibb, the collaboration is a prime example of both companies’ attention to detail and quality. “When we developed our Citrus Tonic, we scoured Mexico to identify the most dedicated producers of exceptional citrus fruits. This enabled us to create a mixer that complements and enhances Patrón Tequila’s stellar flavor profile,” he added.

The new product follows closely on the heels of Fever-Tree’s other release, an aromatic tonic water that is made with, among other flavors, angostura bark (as in one of the ingredients in Angostura bitters). It’s ideal for a drink like a pink gin and tonic.

Fever-Tree Citrus Tonic will be available at a variety of cocktail bars around the world as well as for purchase on Reserve Bar. A four-pack of 200 ml bottles will cost you $5.99 while a 500 ml bottle will run you a mere $3.99.

Gin is one of the only spirits that you see on a shelf, and regardless of the quality, you assume you’re going to take it home and mix it with other ingredients to make a cocktail. To many, the thought of drinking gin neat never even occurs to them. Even if they enjoy the juniper, floral, and botanical aromas and flavors of their favorite gin, they still prefer to mix it with other ingredients to make it more palatable.

But it also shouldn’t surprise you that some people enjoy drinking their gin neat or at least prefer a gin that they could drink neat if they chose to do so. Personally, I am one of those people. I enjoy gin so much that I try my best not to mask its flavors with overpowering ingredients. Sure, I like a good Gin & Tonic from time to time. But it’s definitely going to be heavier on gin than tonic if you know what I mean.
