Instagram releases Boomerang because GIFs are taking over the world

If you’re inexplicably hypnotized by one-second videos played on loop ad nauseam, Instagram has a present for you, and it’s called Boomerang. Today, the app that makes all of our lives look better than they are is releasing a new standalone app that allows you to take five photos, string them together into a GIF, and play them over. And over. And over. Tapping into our collective obsession with GIFs, using Boomerang is as easy as tapping your photo button on your phone — then, the app does the rest.

As explained on the Instagram blog, “Boomerang takes a burst of photos and stitches them together into a high-quality mini video that plays forward and backward. Shoot in portrait or landscape. Share it on Instagram. Boomerang automatically saves it to your camera roll.” Effectively turning your normal ‘grams into supercharged mini-vids, Boomerang allows you to “transform an ordinary selfie with your friends into a funny video,” or better yet, “Get that exact moment your friend blows out his birthday candles, then watch them come back to life again and again.” Seriously, who doesn’t wanna relive that moment?

As Instagram’s third standalone app (it was preceded by Hyperlapse, which creates time-lapses, and Layout, which creates collages), Boomerang isn’t necessarily the most novel of developments. The Google Photos animation feature achieves a similar results, as does Instagram competitor Phhhoto, which allows you to capture “instant moving pictures” and crossed 1 million users back in March.

And of course, there are other apps like Vine and Apple Live Photos, but whereas both of these tools include sound, you’ll have to make do with silence in Boomerang.

Born out of a July hackathon (as all great products seem to be), Boomerang was initially nothing more than a small passion project begun by a few Instagram engineers. But soon, as the app gained traction within Instagram, the team decided to take it public and let the whole world experience the joys of instant GIF creation.

“Now, with Boomerang,” says the Instagram team, “we can’t wait to see what you’ll create next.”

The first sampler you can pick up is the Olivia. These folks are a pretty big staple of the cigar world and have been making cigars since the 1800s. The 10-cigar sampler usually goes for $97 and includes a nice selection from Connecticut Reserve Toro to Serie O Maduro Robusto. Another bundle from an old-school Cigar maker is the La Aurora pack, which comes with a lot of classic flavors like La Aurora Preferidos 1903 and La Aurora 115 Anniversario. The 10-pack usually goes for $105, so it's pretty high-end, but this deal knocks it down to $20, so it's perfect if you've been wanting to try it out.

Even as Netflix is raising prices on consumers, the company has also announced that it will be introducing couch co-op and party games for subscribers. The company has offered cloud gaming as a "beta" to a subset of its subscribers since 2023, and the move into co-op games suggests that the streamer will continue to invest in this area.

Co-CEO Greg Peters made the announcement as part of the company's Q4 earnings report, but he didn't detail what games might be available through this new platform. “We think of this as a successor to family board game night or an evolution of what the game show on TV used to be," he explained.

The best adventure movies: The films that keep you on the edge of your seat
These adventure movies will take you to new parts of the world
Harrison Ford in Raiders of the Lost Ark

The idea of an adventure movie is pretty specialized. These are movies that exist broadly within the world of action cinema, but they are just one small corner of that world. These movies typically involve exotic locations, traps, and tunnels. Sometimes, they're set in the jungle or the desert, and sometimes they're set on the high seas.

Personally, I'm partial to sea-faring movies, maybe in part because I have no desire to live my life on the water. In my own life, these movies have often represented a chance to understand the world, and to appreciate its vastness, splendor, and danger.
