After two years off the air, Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is set to return to Amazon Prime Video at the end of August. Ahead of its return, showrunners Patrick McKay and J.D. Payne sat down with Total Film to talk through the new season and what it has in store. The interview also includes a new image of Morfyyd Clark’s Galadriel on her horse at night, but many were drawn to what the showrunners said about how the new season will start.

“Do you want to hear the opening? We open in the darkness, an orc walks in, and we see there are thousands of orcs gathered,” McKay said. “He’s about to be crowned, pitching his vision of Middle-earth, and right before they lay the crown on his head, his right-hand man, Adar, turns it upside down, and stabs him in the back. It’s the assassination of Sauron.”

In other words, the new season will begin with a flashback to the end of the First Age, when Sauron was betrayed by his allies. It was at the end of season 1 that we learned that Charlie Vickers’ character Halbrand was actually Sauron, so this flashback is likely an attempt to fill in some of his backstory.

McKay and Payne also said that season 2 will be much more focused on the show’s villains that the first season was. “Right from the beginning, Sauron is the center of gravity. It’s an ensemble show, but the focus is starting to get pulled towards him. He’s driving everything,” McKay explained.

Amazon likely has high hopes for this show’s second season, which follows on from a fairly lackluster response to the first, and data showing that while many people started the show, fewer finished it.

In its long history as a website, YouTube has never been closely associated with television. Now, though, the company's CEO Neal Mohan revealed in their annual letter that users are watching more than 1 billion hours of YouTube on their TV every year.

According to Neilsen's ratings information, YouTube has maintained its dominance as the most used streaming app for the past two years, and even made changes to its TV app so that it looked more like a regular streaming service. Among the significant changes that YouTube made to its app in 2024 was one that gives you the ability to pull up comments on one side of the screen while you watch the video on the other, much as you can in the mobile app. The app also added a "seasons" feature that makes it easier to navigate long-running series of videos in much the same way you might navigate

Few directors have created a distinct brand with its own fanbase quite the way that Wes Anderson has managed to do over the past 20 years. While his style is not for everyone, movie lovers tend to love him, and his last movie Asteroid City was one of his most critically acclaimed to date.

Now, Variety is reporting that Anderson's next movie, The Phonecian Scheme, will hit theaters on May 30. The film, which Anderson directed and also co-wrote with Roman Coppola, stars Benicio Del Toro as Zsa-zsa Korda, one of the richest men in Europe while Mia Threapleton plays his daughter and Michael Cera portrays her tutor.

It's been a small eternity since the last season of Stranger Things, and there was a long wait between seasons 3 and 4 as well. Some of that was outside of the control of the Duffer brothers, the show's co-creators, but now, they're assuring fans that the final season will be available soon.

“We’re focused on visual effects sequences right now, which started back in January,” Ross Duffer told the audience at the SCAD TVfest, according to Variety. “It’s going well. We’re actually ahead of schedule, which is rare for us.”
