When Steve Howey isn’t playing bartender Kevin Ball on the Showtime hit Shameless, the 6’4″ actor is getting physical. Whether racing triathlons, golfing, trying Muay Thai with co-star Jeremy Allen White, shooting hoops, or snowboarding with his son, Howey says being active, “brings sanity, increases testosterone, and de-stresses you.”

The Manual caught up with Howey to see how the 41-year-old philanthropist, producer, and dad gets his sweat on.

The Manual: What are your favorite outdoor hobbies?

Recommended Videos

Steve Howey: I like to run outside in general [hills] for a workout. That’s definitely a hard one. For a more extreme activity, I definitely love snowboarding. Then, I like playing baseball with friends and my son.

TM: You didn’t mention hoops … which we’re pretty sure you’re a semi-pro in?

SH: You could say I’m an expert in basketball. I played in college. I’d been playing for a long time, and I’ve always loved it. I still love watching it too. I’m a Lakers fan, for sure.

TM: Would Kevin Ball ball? Or do something else outdoors?

SH: Sell drugs [Laughs]. He’d smoke cigarettes and watch people drive by.

TM: Do you film your outdoor activities?

SH: Absolutely! It’s fun to shoot outdoor adventures to not only have a record of what you’re doing but also go back and relive those moments. OPKIXOne has made the process super simple, easy, and hands-free for me. I’ll put on the sunglasses and I don’t have to hold my phone up anymore or mount it. The angles you can get with both cameras are really crazy too, given their size and flexibility.

TM: We feel weird filming ourselves since we’re not pros, but should we start?

SH: Everybody should be able to celebrate and commemorate their adventures, workouts, or outdoor activities. I’ll film workouts often. I might Instagram Story a new workout I’m trying document a marathon or triathlon I just finished or I’m preparing for. It’s cool to go back and study what you did. For personal moments, it’s just great to have that saved forever.

TM: Tell us more about OPKIXOne. Is it like a GoPro?

SH: The goal of OPKIX was to democratize the whole [filming] process. You don’t need an elaborate setup anymore. I think the company has achieved unparalleled ease-of-use right out of the box.

TM: You’re such a happy dude — do you credit that to being active and getting outside?

SH: It’s one of the most important things for everyone, not just guys. It helps release dopamine in the brain, which makes you feel better. Sweating is just good for you.

TM: Even on off-days, you get outside on your motorcycle. What’s your favorite bike?

SH: My all-time favorite bike is the Harley Davidson Dyna Wide Glide. I’ve got one that I love.

Reacher season 3: Rumors, plot, cast, and more
Get up to date on Reacher season 3
Alan Ritchson in Reacher

The era of Jack Ryan may be over, but Reacher is carrying on as one of the best shows on Amazon Prime Video. This action thriller is based on Lee Child's Jack Reacher novels, which previously featured Tom Cruise in the leading role of two different movies. But for Prime Video, Alan Ritchson has stepped into the role of Jack Reacher, a former member of the U.S. Army Military Police Corps who drifts from town to town and takes justice into his own hands when the local law enforcement isn't enough. While it hasn't been nominated for any Emmy Awards yet, Reacher has seen some recognition at the Saturn Awards with a nomination for Best Streaming Action & Adventure Series.

Prime Video didn't waste any time before renewing Reacher for a third season last year. And while new episodes are still several months away, we're sharing everything we know about Reacher season 3.

Severance season 2: Everything we know so far
Everything you need to know about Apple TV+'s Severance season 2
The cast of Severance.

In 2022, Severance became one of the best shows on Apple TV+ by turning the idea of a work drama on its head. Thanks to the series' sci-fi premise, the split between work and home life results in two distinct personalities residing in the same body for each of the employees at Lumon Industries. And the employees at work want to know more about who they are outside of the office.

Apple TV+ renewed Severance for a second season in April 2022, and it's now been over two years since the season 1 finale because of the actors' and writers' strike of 2023. The new season is finally on the way this month and critics are already saying it's incredible! The show was already praised by the Emmys in 2022 when it garnered five nominations, including for Outstanding Drama series. Here's everything we know about Severance season 2.
What is Severance about?
Severance could have been a standard workplace drama if not for the show's "severance" procedure. Essentially, Lumon Industries has devised a way to split its employees' identities so they have no memories of their lives outside of work. When they're in the office, all they know is their names, their employee duties, and the skills necessary to do their jobs.

Netflix has original comedies and sitcom classics
Costanza family on Seinfeld

Comedies are often the gateway to the wonderful world of TV. I remember frantically turning on ABC Family after school to watch a rerun of Full House each day. I stayed up late to laugh with George Lopez in his self-titled sitcom on Nick-at-Nite. TV comedy series serve as the appetizer for fans to dive into more complex series, but sometimes a sitcom or a comedy is good enough to satisfy audiences all on its own.

Netflix is home to some of the best comedy series available today. Not many streamers have the expansive library of original series and classic oldies to serve multiple generations of fans. These are the best comedy shows on Netflix to try out. If you don't like at least one of these, then "NO SOUP FOR YOU!"
