If the average lifespan of a tweet is five seconds, how long does an Instagram post last for? Though its existence may not be quite as brief, we generally consume the images on our Instagram feed in a similar fashion as we scroll down, gobble them up and forget about them forever more.
Alas, that all changed last month when two Spanish creative’s, Phil Gonzalez and Jorge Martínez launched their Instagram trilogy: the Instagramers Gallery, InstagramersGallery.com and a pair of Instagramers Prizes, one of which is the largest photography prize to date. Impressive right?
The online gallery calls Instagram users to submit the best of their personal pictures from their own profile. Once uploaded, anyone is free to download the image for free, though the program only allows users to download one image a day to encourage a diplomatic ranking of the most popular images. Each day, the photographer of the most popular image is awarded $1000 by the founders and is automatically entered into the final prize draw where a hefty $100,000 is up for grabs. We know, we’re desperately snapping breathtaking mountainscapes and the first sprigs of spring blossom too…
If you’re craving a screen break and you’re in Miami, we highly recommend paying a visit to bricks and mortar version of the gallery. Located in Wynwood, Miami’s art district, the space is the first of many planned global openings that will promote the ultra accessible photography concept.
