Forget the SNES and Go Real Retro with These Refurbished Arcade Tables

Sometimes, a regular coffee table just won’t do. If you’re a gaming enthusiast like many of us are at The Manual, you’ll probably be as stoked as we were to discover Surface Tension, a UK-creative firm crafting arcade tables.

The concept is pretty neat: They take a standard, everyday coffee table and insert the mechanical and electrical interiors necessary to turn it into a plug-and-play arcade game.

These tables are available in a few different options. The Dual model comes with 60 preloaded games ideal for one-on-one competition. It replicates the old vintage setup with a screen flip that moves to either side of the table, so both players share one viewing experience. (Plus, the walnut veneer and glass sides remind us of those old-school ’90s games at the pizza parlor.)

The Nucleus is the granddaddy of functional arcade tables with plenty of games and the ability to install your own. You can also plug in an HDMI cable and stream from your favorite video service.

The arcade tables’ classic styling make them a great addition to any living room or the most epic of additions to a modern man cave. When not in use, the control panel hides away so your friends won’t get too jealous (they’ll think you just have a regular coffee table). When you’re ready to unveil the surprise, the panel opens to reveal an assortment of buttons and levers.

Surface Tension also takes the same approach to recreating traditional upright game cabinets — the ones we all know and love from the arcades of yesteryear. The Retrograde model builds on that with a modern sound system and similar connections to stream music and video after gameplay is done. The company also offers “pre-loved” models, functional Rubik’s Cube storage tables, and other game-themed accessories.

All of Surface Tension models are available online.

Do we actually need a John Wick 5?
John Wick 5 could be great, but if they're not going to quit following Chapter 4, I think it's fair to ask when they will.
John Wick Chapter 4

News broke this spring that John Wick was coming back to the big screen. John Wick 5 was confirmed, as was the news that John Wick: Chapter 4 director Chad Stahelski would be back for the new film. This surprise franchise, which started with a 2014 film that became a cult phenomenon, has grossed more money with each subsequent installment.

Given the franchise's success in theaters, it's hard to argue with the capitalistic logic of keeping the franchise going. If you're a fan of John Wick as a franchise, though, you'd be forgiven for wondering whether this is a wise move.

How Breaking Bad transformed the TV landscape for good
Almost two decades after its premiere, Vince Gilligan's crime drama towers over all others
Bryan Cranston as Walter White in Breaking Bad season 5

I watched Breaking Bad for the first time in January 2021. It might sound weird to remember the exact month you started watching a show, but I think it means that Vince Gilligan's master creation is just that memorable. This was about eight years after the show completed its original run on AMC. After hearing its greatness regurgitated by every media outlet and superfan ad nauseam for a decade, it's safe to say there was a mountain of expectations and a certain amount of respect I gave the series right from the jump.

Everything I had been told about Breaking Bad still didn't paint the complete picture of the viewing experience I fell in love with. Watching Walter White transform from your regular, superordinary chemistry teacher into the vile and egotistical mess he finishes as in season 5 is TV's ultimate roller coaster. Just as Walter tells his wife in the series finale when asked why he indulged in his Heisenberg alter ego, the series' 62 episodes made me feel alive.

Inside the Pedr-evolution: What makes Pedro Pascal so castable?
The Last of Us star might be the biggest actor alive right now
Pedro Pascal in Gladiator 2

Remember the McConsaisance? Throughout the middle of the 2010s, it felt like Matthew McConaughey was in every big movie and show that popped up on our screens. He had been famous for decades, but his emergence as a star in elite-level TV and film made him an icon. Robert Downey Jr. had been the butt end of jokes throughout the 1990s after suffering through substance abuse problems, but his casting in Iron Man made him the alpha dog of superhero movies for the last 15-plus years.

It's always fun to dissect why someone who has been in the entertainment industry for eons suddenly hits their prime later in life. Pedro Pascal is the ultimate symbol of this ideal, though. The Chilean-born actor was a small supporting actor in a variety of projects for his entire life, but the 2020s have seen his life flipped upside down in the best way possible. The Mandalorian, The Last of Us, The Fantastic Four, Gladiator II, and The Wild Robot are each big enough on their own that any actor would love to star in just one of these projects.
