When was the last time you were able to walk out of the office and hit the trail for a lunch break hike instead of grabbing a quick bite at Steak and Shake? If you’re anything like us, the answer is probably never; we all spend too much time staring at pictures of mountains on Instagram than actually disappearing for a weekend – or even an afternoon for that matter – on the trail. However, just because your gnarliest hike happens to be across Central Park doesn’t mean you can’t be prepared for a week long jaunt down the Appalachian Trail, even if only in your dreams.
We came across boutique boot maker Forsake last fall on our never ending quest to keep our feet dry both on and off the trail during wet Rocky Mountain winters, and our season-long test has been pure bliss. Forsake was started in 2010 by a pair of friends living on the road in search of the best deep powder turns. They needed a shoe that could handle the rigors of ski resort living – icy parking lots, early morning trails, and the apres ski scene – all while pulling double duty at work and around town. The resulting line up of “sneaker boots” are inspired by classic hiking boots, with an added touch of modern materials and smooth designs.
The Hiker ($130) is Forsake’s Flagship waterproof model, and our favorite for everything from morning coffee runs through slush and rain, to impromptu afternoon hikes after ducking out of the office a little too early. With reinforced heel and toe bumpers, and full seam taping, they’ll stay looking brand new after a few seasons of hard wear. Can your suede Chukkas do that?
Their latest addition to the collection is the new Banks ($100). This low top hearkens back to early 1960s designs and the heyday of desert tower climbing in the untracked Southwest. Forsake’s update has a beefed up midsole and outer for comfort whether you’re traversing red rock in Arches National Park, or just crossing the street to your subway stop. It helps that they look good paired with anything from your favorite jeans to a dressier pair of chinos for the office.
This summer you might be planning on packing up the car for a week long adventure chasing mountain summits and fly-fishing holes. Maybe your idea of adventure is heading for an afternoon walking suburban trails and parks for a little reconnection with nature. Regardless of where you go, your adventure will be much more fun when your feet are comfortable and dry sporting a pair of Forsake boots.
