Who tops our list when it comes to stylish fall footwear? It’s up for debate, but it might be none other than Nisolo, the ethically and sustainably made footwear brand that’s on a mission to shake up the fashion industry — one pair of handsomely crafted shoes at a time. Although they also make women’s shoes, our focus is on the men’s offering — it’s packed full of stylish footwear to own this season, to say the least. The brand tracks its social impact, ensuring workers receive fair wages and fair treatment, among other key metrics. And at the same time, Nisolo sources its footwear with sustainability and an eco-conscious mindset at the forefront. All of this is to say: They also excel at making supremely stylish footwear. Check out our favorites from the line below.

Remarkably comfortable and made from supple-yet-durable leather, the Lockwood Trench Boot is the real deal. In an edgy-yet-accessible Steel color, these leather-laced boots are fit for a casual day at the office this fall, followed by an evening rock concert — they’ll surely look even better with a few stories to tell. Oh, and the price? Excellent.

Plenty of sneakers these days go the minimalist route — perhaps too many. It’s nice to see a sneaker with a bit of character, made from unique, beautiful leather that’ll age very well over time. Finish it off with a comfortable Vibram sole and a simple silhouette, and you’ve got a pair of kicks to team up with a chambray shirt and dark denim — definitely a winner when it comes to stylish fall footwear

Nisolo Luca Chukka Boot, $198

Between a great pair of trench boots and a sleek pair of sneakers, what more do you need? Some Nisolo chukka boots wouldn’t go amiss — the Luca Chukka Boot fits the bill quite nicely. Sharp enough to team with tweed trousers and a navy blazer this fall, the Luca Chukka Boots’ handsome shade of Brandy leather also goes well with a rugged field jacket and faded denim. Can you say stylish fall footwear? Indeed.

Nisolo Chavito Chukka Boot in Oak, $158

With striking construction and a silhouette that stands out from other chukka boots in the best way possible, the Chavito is the answer to the boot you’ve been on the hunt for in advance of fall. The durable rubber outsole makes these boots fit for all kinds of terrain — although we think they might look best teamed with gray denim and a belted shawl cardigan on the first chilly day of fall.

Nisolo Calano Oxford in Oak, $188

If you like your dress shoes less stuffy and imbued with more character, the Calano Oxford is the perfect pair to add to your fall footwear rotation. Made in the same handsome leather as the Chavito Chukka Boot, the rich texture adds visual interest to any outfit — particularly broken-in denim and a herringbone blazer when the temperatures drop.

Banana Republic’s New Jeans Are Changing the Way Denim Is Made
banana republic dry indigo denim jeans feature

Doing things sustainably in the fashion industry -- one that can sometimes cut corners in favor of churning out the latest and greatest -- isn’t always easy. And that’s doubly so when it comes to crafting men’s denim, one of the most energy and resource-intensive products on the market -- and yet, Banana Republic’s remarkable new Dry Indigo Denim is changing the way denim is made by using a heck of a lot less water than normal in the process.

By a heck of a lot less water, to be precise, we mean that Banana Republic’s new denim line is made using 99% (yes, 99%) less water than conventional denim, to go along with 89% fewer chemicals, reducing energy usage by a whopping 65% in the process. It’s the foam-dyeing process that cuts down on energy and water usage so effectively, while at the same time delivering a pair of jeans with the same look, fit, and feel as traditional (less eco-conscious) denim.

This Made-to-Order Shoe Brand Wants to Change the Footwear Industry

Get Peter Sacco talking about Guatemala, and you’ll hear a history lesson, a master class in economics, and a political purview that leaves him wide-eyed and nearly yelling with excitement. It’s a passion that’s curious for a 28-year-old, 6-foot-3 gringo from Massachusetts who founded Adelante Shoe Co. in 2016 and is now CEO. The brand prides itself on not only providing handmade, made-to-order leather shoes and boots in just 10 days, but on doing so by putting its employees' livelihoods — not profits — first.

It’s a strategy that might make other entrepreneurs cringe, but in the past three years, Sacco has breached more than $2 million in sales and has changed the lives of 40 craftsmen in the brand's headquarters in Pastores, a small town just outside the tourist hub of Antigua.

How Leather Shoes Are Made in the Old Country
leather care tips adelante shoe co tm 54

Our world today might be faster and more efficient, but there’s a lot we can learn from older generations. How to cook, how to live, and even how to make everyday items that are built to last. I traveled to Guatemala, to a place about an hour and a half outside the country’s capital to find out how Adelante Shoe Co.
makes a pair of shoes from scratch. Over two days, its second-generation craftsmen took me through the simple yet laborious process of making a men’s leather cap-toe shoe.

The artisan I worked with, Adrian Gomez, works in a small workshop on a hill with nothing but a plastic chair and small wooden workbench that’s covered in nails, glue, a worn-down knife, and his 25-year old hammer — the same one his father used. He can produce about 10 pairs of shoes per week, but it takes more than just his work to deliver Adelante’s footwear. They work as a team to divide the labor, while still delivering made-to-order shoes in just 10 days.
