As far as heritage brands go, Filson is all about honesty, quality and durability. The brand, which was founded in 1897 with the intent to protect from harsh weather conditions like what Hume Nisbet experienced in the Yukon in 1897:
“Try to recall your sensations on the coldest night you have ever known: try to intensify the most bitter ice blast that has ever pierced your marrow by a thousand fold; even then you will not be able to realize spring in the Chilkoot Canyon, far less midwinter on the Klondike.”
Since then Filson has built its reputation on creating quality clothing for hunters, fishermen, engineers, explorers, mariners and miners, carrying itself into the 21st century with modern updates. Filson’s spring offerings include a mix of old and new in fabrics like soy wax cotton, bonded wool and vachetta-coated fabric. Filson’s spring accessories include a functional duffle bag, a travel bag and some things they didn’t have in the 1800s — a padded laptop briefcase, along with an iPad sleeve and iPad case.
We can’t wait until next season. For fall, the brand’s classic Islamorada fishing shirt has been reconceived to improve its warm weather functionality, and for this season the brand looked back into its deep archives to bring a limited edition of hand numbered heritage shirts and vests.
Filson may have graduated to a more stylish approach for the modern man of the 21st century, but the heritage brand still has its values from the 1800s in mind.
