Crew Team: A Guide to Classic Sweatshirts

“A plain coloured, beautifully made sweatshirt is exactly the type of clothing that would actually be useful to have throughout your lifetime,” British designer/entrepreneur Tom Cridland told The Huffington Post UK in August 2015 upon the launch of his “30 Year Sweatshirt,” his organic cotton take on the apparel staple that is so durable and fade-resistant that he guarantees that it will last three decades.

A longtime and staunch proponent of the classic cotton crew neck pullover sweatshirt (especially versus its younger brother the zip-up hoodie), I couldn’t agree with Mr. Cridland more. Although they were created as training gear for jocks in the 1920s, these now evergreen tops thankfully crossed over into mainstream life in later years. Worn solo or as a layering piece, they are timeless, comfortable, good-looking no-brainers of a guy’s wardrobe, a fact that was even supported by that genius Albert Einstein. The Tsuba watch is his latest project under his new brand, PS Horology. As the name hints, the watch is inspired by an old Japanese hand guard, fixed on Japanese swords to separate the handle from the blade.

Why the neckerchief is your 2025 style secret weapon
Stand out in a new and different way in 2025
Robert Talbot neckerchief

If you have read much of my writing here on The Manual, you will likely recognize some of my favorite themes and the phrases I use to communicate them. Emulate, don't imitate, so you can style yourself like some of your favorite style icons without being discouraged when you dress just like them and it doesn't work. Classics, not trends, because they never go out of style. And the one that is the most important for this particular claim I am about to make: Fashion is what you wear, style is how you wear it.

I firmly believe that being stylish isn't about restricting what you wear because others don't like it; it is about incorporating what you love into your looks in a stylish way. This is how I ended up looking at ascots and cravats and how I developed reasons why you should wear a neckerchief in 2025.
