If you’re a fan of Barrell Craft Spirits, you’ve probably already imbibed the distillery’s award-winning Vantage Bourbon. The elevated version is a blend of straight bourbon finished in three special virgin oak barrels. They are Mizunara, French, and American oak. But that’s not all. After the initial aging, this whiskey had a secondary maturation of twenty-two months in Grand Cru Limited Edition American oak Barrels.

The result is a memorable, complex, 115.16-proof whiskey. According to Barrell, it begins with a nose of grilled peaches, rye spice, lemon peels, oak, ginger, licorice, walnuts, coconuts, coffee, and brown butter. The palate is a mix of pipe tobacco, cocoa beans, gentle spices, caramelized pineapple, honey butter, and herbal notes. The finish is warm, lingering and ends with a pleasant kick of peppery spice.

Stop believing these common rum myths — here’s what’s really true
It's time to debunk the biggest rum myths
Rum barrel

I’ve been lucky enough to write about alcohol for the last two decades. In those years, I’ve learned a lot about whiskey, gin, tequila, rum, and other commons types of hard liquor. But every now and then, I was told a fact only to find out later that it simply wasn’t true. One of the spirits that I heard the most myths about was rum.

It’s no surprise that rum is ripe with myths. This sugarcane and molasses-based spirit has been produced since the 1600s on sugarcane plantations in the Caribbean. That’s a lot of centuries for stories and legends to be born. But this isn’t a time for folklore, we’re looking for facts today. That’s why we turned to a few experts to help us debunk some of the biggest rum myths.
