Holy Crap, Camp Bacon is a Real Place and You Can Go

A Cajun-style pork roast with independent films, music, and bacon…

Yes, it’s the exact setting of how we imagine heaven but it’s also a real event held from May 31 through June 4 in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

This year, Zingerman’s 8th Annual Camp Bacon provides the stomping (and noshing) grounds of a pork-lover’s paradise. The all-you-can-eat “bacon extravaganza” has become a nationally-recognized festival attracting the best pork chefs in the world, renowned food experts, producers, and, of course, us folk simply passionate about some good bacon.

For instance… Clark Rachal is driving 1,300 miles from Louisiana to cook Cochon de Lait and award-winning journalist Simran Sethi is flying in from Rome. NBD.

What’s so cool about Camp Bacon is that while attendees sample film and fair, Camp Bacon is also quietly donating its funds to two of Zingerman’s nonprofits— Southern Foodways Alliance and 4H Club of Washtenaw County.

FYI: Zingerman’s Community of Businesses is a family of nine independently operated businesses all located in the Ann Arbor area, founded by Paul Saginaw and Ari Weinzweig who founded Zingerman’s Delicatessen in 1982. Ari was first inspired to launch Camp Bacon while writing his book Zingerman’s Guide to Better Bacon.

“Over the last eight years Camp Bacon has become one of my favorite events of the year here at Zingerman’s,” says Ari, “and with each year that we do it… the connection with the campers grows stronger, the presentations get more interesting, the food gets better, the bacon gets…well, everything’s already better with bacon.”

Amen, brother.

And as with any camp, there’s a schedule of activities. But it’s a far stretch from the crafting and nature hikes we experienced as camps as a kid. Grab something to hold on to because this will be intense…

The real reason air travel is such a nightmare (and how you can save your trip)
Run into trouble at the airport this year? You’re not alone. Here’s the scoop on commercial aviation in 2022
A group of airplanes are parked at the airport.

By now, you’ve likely seen and heard plenty of horror stories about the sorry state of air travel. Not only has it been normal for “normal people” to run into flight delays, flight cancelations, lost luggage, abnormally long waits on the tarmac, and much more, but even many of us “travel pros” have run into this kind of trouble.

How on earth did this happen? Why is it this bad now? And really, who's doing what to clean up this mess? Today, we're doing our best to answer all your questions about the troubled state of air travel and how you can make your air travel plans less troublesome in the future.
Yes, even we travel experts run into turbulence in the sky — and in the airport

Going Vegan Might Be the Single Best Thing You Can Do to Help Save the Planet
Why Going Vegan Is Good for the Environment

People choose to go vegan for a variety of reasons. Two of the most popular -- health and ethics -- will be argued until our sun goes supernova. But, the science is in on a third reason: The environment. There’s a mountain of evidence to suggest that going vegan might be the single best thing you can do to help save the planet. Forget the sad, Sarah McLachlan-soundtracked appeals to emotion or the brow-beating by vegans about what an awful person you are as a meat-eater. If you finally decide to go vegan for no other reason, do it for the planet.

From an ecological perspective, we eat way too much meat. It’s impossible to sidestep the fact that our meat consumption is disastrous for the environment. Atmospheric carbon dioxide levels are higher than they’ve been at any time in recorded history. By now, all of us have heard of the massive amounts of greenhouse gases that livestock contributes to the situation each year. Beef and dairy cows are the two main culprits. Exact numbers are tricky to nail down. Some estimates claim that more than 220 grams of carbon dioxide equivalents are released into the atmosphere for every gram of beef protein produced. For us non-metric-minded Statesiders, that amounts to more than 100,000 grams of greenhouse gases per pound. The numbers are truly staggering.
