This summer has been unpredictable with its weather, with boiling hot days followed by epic downpours of rain. If you’ve planned out the perfect barbecue weekend or pool party just to have it ruined by the rain, then as a recompense you may be able to get your hands on a round of free margaritas.

Well known tequila brand Cuervo is offering a Marg-a-Raincheck promotion, where it is giving away $50 worth of margaritas to those who have found their fun summer weather washed out, running from now until Labor Day. To enter, you can take a screenshot of your sad damp weather forecast for your city or even snap a picture of the downpour from your window, then upload it to the Cuervo website. Winners will be selected through the summer until September 2.

So perhaps your pool party won’t be a great success if the heavens open, but you can at least enjoy a round of drinks as commiseration.

If you feel the need for an immediate salve to your disrupted weekend plans though, you can always check out our advice from top bartenders on how to make your own margarita, one of the all-time great tequila cocktails featuring blanco tequila, fresh lime juice, Cointreau, and sweetener.

A signature part of the margarita is the salt rim, which is necessary to balance out the sweetness of the drink overall. Making a salt rim is dead easy — just take your margarita glass and run a wedge of lime around the rum while pressing firmly to make sure it has a good layer of lime juice. Then put some salt onto a plate and roll the glass in it to create your rim.

As part of the ongoing celebration of Negroni Week, now is the perfect time to try out some negroni variations. With its simple formula of equal parts of gin, sweet vermouth, and Campari, the negroni is the ideal template for playing with different flavors and tweaking ingredients to make the drink your own.

The good news is that the negroni template is very flexible, so you can use just about any combination of spirit, sweeter aperitif, and bitter amaro and make something tasty. If you've got a well stocked bar and you feel like being brave, try out any combination and see how it goes.

One of the delights of cocktail making is learning how making a small tweak to a well-known recipe can really make a drink your own. It also helps to have a place to start -- when you're experimenting, you don't need to come up with a recipe from scratch. Rather, you can take inspiration from a drink you already love and make small changes to see how that alters the flavors.

Today we've got a trio of cocktail recipes which take classic combinations and give them a seasonally-appropriate fall twist. There's the El Pueblo, which takes a tequila old fashioned and adds a splash of spicy Ancho Reyes chili liqueur, the Campfire Old Fashioned which uses maple syrup and special bitters to give the classic drink a fall flavor, and the Big Sur Sunset which is a twist on the delicious Clover Club cocktail that adds a sweetener more typically used in tiki drinks, orgeat.

As Labor Day weekend marks the end of summer and the beginning of fall, now is the time to get out your darker spirits. Why not keep the last of the summer vibes with a spritz, but embrace the incoming fall by making it a bourbon spritz rather than an Aperol one? And now is a great time to get out your whiskeys and to try out drinks like a cherry sour or a bourbon Gold Rush.
