No Vacancy: LA’s Strangest, Best, and Most Exciting Speakeasy

There are certain things about No Vacancy that must remain secret until you visit. For example, the entrance and everything it entails. No Vacancy takes its speakeasiness seriously in the best way possible– once you make it inside, you’re not just in a hidden bar, you’re in an alternate reality with surprises around every corner. Oh, and great booze.

inside bar of no vacancy speakeasyThe Houston brothers, who are behind other LA favorites like Harvard & Stone, La Descarga, and Break Room 86 just to name a few, have a knack for creating whole worlds and histories for their bars. This time, they took one of the city’s oldest Victorian homes, built in 1902, and created No Vacancy at the Juniper Hotel, giving you the feeling you’ve traveled back in time to a delightfully creepy hotel. It’s all deeply colored woods, plush red velvets, oriental rugs, and leather furniture– such attention to detail suggests the 20th century inhabitants have just stepped out. The Houstons carefully maintained the home’s leaded glass windows, gas lamps and fireplaces, adding bars where a kitchen may once have been. Cocooned in this rich fantastical world, it’s almost impossible to remember it’s 2016 outside.

A lobby area, complete with mailboxes for “guests” bleeds off into a large bar room, keep an eye out for the phone booth, which is now thepatio of los angeles speakeasy no vacancy at the juniper hotel photo booth, and stop by the gift shop of sorts where you can often find a psychic on hand. Then head out to the expansive patio, complete with its own bar and fireplaces. The patio feels like you’re at a Roaring 20’s Hollywood party. String lights looping across the space give way to a thicker wire running across like a tightrope. Because it is a tightrope. No Vacancy has tightrope walkers, live music, burlesque dancers, and even fire eaters. It’s an outlandish spectacle Gatsby himself would approve of.

Booze is an equally important part of the experience and some of the finest bartenders, Adrian Biggs, Julian Cox, and Simon Ford among them, were brought in to create the perfect drinks for the Prohibition-era theme. The Dirty Dozen they call them, and in keeping with the Juniper Hotel name, gin is heavily featured. If you’re not sure where to start, order the China Doll: Caprock Gin, jasmine water, lemon juice, coconut jasmine cream and egg white. Tiny details like garnishes of edible flowers set this place apart from most other mixologist hotspots and make the $10-$14 per drink a bit more palatable.

Dress code (no flip flops, athletic clothes, hats or loud colors) is strongly suggested, though not mandatory, but you really won’t want to look like a slob at this place. Come early or you risk standing in line, not just to get in, but also for drinks. Then again, there is much to distract you, so the wait won’t feel so tedious.

9 best Walton Goggins TV shows: From Justified to The Righteous Gemstones
Google Goggins and you'll find a show you love
Walton Goggins in The White Lotus season 3

My favorite type of actor is the one where I'm watching my new favorite show, and they appear on the screen, and I immediately tell my brother (who happens to be my go-to TV-watching partner), "It's that guy!" No name, no recollection of where I've seen him before. "He's in everything!" This is the best compliment someone can give an actor when they star in a new project. Sure, it's probably fun to be Tom Hanks or Denzel Washington, but those superstars almost devour the characters they play. It's sometimes a disservice to a story when the actors are so famous that they can't help but overshadow the role they're playing.

Walton Goggins is the ultimate "I know him!" TV actor of the 21st century. This man is a chameleon to the highest degree. Goggins transforms from a bitter boomer on a vacation to a transgender motorcycle mama in the blink of an eye. His talents have finally garnered him the recognition he deserves. Before he outgrows his discreet status as TV's most versatile performer, it's time to collect all of his best TV shows into one nice package. After reading this list you'll finally be able to put a name to his face when he's in another great show. These are the best Walton Goggins TV shows.

April binge guide: The best shows on Amazon Prime
An ultimate list of the best shows available to stream on Amazon Prime
Alan Ritchson in Reacher

Even if you've picked a streaming service, it can be impossible to narrow down what you're really looking for. If you've run out of the best Netflix movies and Netflix Original series to watch, you'll need to find somewhere else to turn. Fortunately, Netflix is far from the only game in town. Anyone who uses Amazon Prime to get packages delivered to them quickly also has access to a library of fairly impressive shows and movies.

Amazon is a mega corporation, and you and I both know that it might not care that much about its streaming offerings. It's not it makes its money, or at least most of it. Even still, I was shocked at how many great shows you can watch on Prime, including some you might not expect.

Top picks for April: The best movies on Paramount+
Though a newer entry to the streaming world, Paramount+ has some good picks
Tom Cruise in Top Gun: Maverick

Paramount Plus is one of the newer arrivals on the streaming scene, and while its roster is rolling out plenty of exciting streaming original and acquired shows, there are plenty of movies on Paramount Plus that are worth exploring. From the classic to the current and from the vintage to the very new, Paramount+ offers an excellent movie lineup that rivals any other streaming service, even Netflix.
That might seem hard to believe, but between its library of classic titles and the fact that Paramount still puts new movies out every year, there are few services that offer you more bang for your buck. Personally, I could spend all day perusing the streaming service without running out of interesting things to watch.
