Beards, Booze, and Bacon: The Bacon Episode

What new bourbon are we pumped about? Which hiking trail are we exploring? Why is the next supercar so cool? The Manual is a website dedicated to helping men live a more engaged life. Each week, our editors and guests get together for a round-table discussion on what’s new, exciting, and unique in the men’s lifestyle world. So pop open your favorite brew, step into your man cave, and start streaming. Shout out to Portland-based No Kind of Rider for our intro/exit music.

This week’s episode of Beards, Booze, and Bacon: The Manual Podcast focused solely on the beloved last component of our podcast name: bacon. With Greg Nibler hosting; Editor-in-Chief Cator Sparks joining from South Carolina; Spirits Editor Sam Slaughter calling in from New York; and Associate Editor Chase McPeak coming together to discuss all things bacon, you should definitely not listen to this episode on an empty stomach.

First up, Chase McPeak talks the culinary side of bacon and first offers up three different ways to cook bacon, how each method differs, and what kind of a bacon situation lends itself to which cooking style. From there, he goes on to discuss the wild and wonderful world of bacon subscription boxes.

Following that, Cator Sparks talks sustainable and humane farming, mentioning the Darling farm in South Carolina, and its yearly Lowcountry Boucherie “Blood on the River,” a traditional communal hog-slaughter and roast.

Finally, spirits afficionado Sam Slaughter inform our audience about fat-washed spirits: what the hell they are exactly, how you make them, and some of the different drinks that can be created from them.
