LAX’s Exclusive Private Suite Will Make You Love Waiting at the Airport

From screaming children to $18 Old Fashioneds to the horror show that is TSA security, being stuck at the airport is a special kind of torture. Of course, some well-heeled gentlemen enjoy a level of air travel luxury that most of us have never heard of, let along personally experienced. For those traveling elite, there is The Private Suite LAX.

The Private Suite promises the sort of experience typically reserved for traveling heads of state, Russian oil tycoons, and Beyonce. Members enter the airport through a special access gate which leads to a private compound located on the edge of the runway at Los Angeles International Airport. Inside, eight staffers are on-hand to cater to members’ every whim, from dining to sleeping to travel to medical.

Each of the 10 individual luxury suites accommodates up to four guests. Every space is awash in modern, high-end conveniences including a gourmet food and beverage pantry, complimentary spa services (including in-suite massages, haircuts, and manicures), and free, unlimited detailing of personal cars while parked at LAX. Executives looking to get busy have access to a video conference suite and concierge doctor visits can be arranged for anyone seeking medical advice. For members keen to do nothing at all, a private two-person daybed provides a place to nap while enjoying a runway view of the planes landing and taking off outside.

Because The Private Suite is situated adjacent the runways at LAX, the processes of baggage handling, clearing TSA security, and physically getting from car to plane are almost invisible. The company’s website claims, “It typically takes 2,200 footsteps from car seat to plane seat. For members of The Private Suite, it’s 70 footsteps. And they are all peaceful footsteps.” Yes, life is short — conserve your footsteps. At boarding time, members and their luggage are chauffeured via a BMW 7 Series sedan across the tarmac directly to their aircraft ahead of every other passenger.

While similar concepts exist in Frankfurt and Heathrow, The Private Suite presents the first such VIP air travel experience in the U.S. Annual memberships are available for $4,500, which includes access for the primary member and three immediate family members. That fee only buys members the “privilege” of access to the suite; actual use of the suite requires additional per-trip fees of $2,700 for one-way domestic flights or $3,000 for one-way international flights. Non-members skip the annual fee (and access to most of The Private Suite’s best perks) but pay a higher per-use premium: $3,500 for domestic one-way flights and $4,000 for international one-way travel. But, hey, at least you can now skate through the airport with nary a scuff on your fancy Chelsea boots.

Icelandair bolsters partnership with this technology company
Icelandair renews agreement with Amadeus
icelandair amadeus agreement mountains

Icelandair has extended and broadened its collaboration with travel technology company Amadeus. With the partnership, the airline looks to better meet travelers’ needs. It’s a dual-track deal that makes Amadeus Altéa NDC the API NDC provider for Icelandair and distributes the carrier’s fares and content, including web fares and NDC-based content.
New Distribution Capability (NDC) gives travelers detailed info and flexibility

NDC is a data exchange format supported by the travel industry. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) helped start the program (NDC Program) for improved capability and communications between airlines and travel agents. Benefits include a transparent shopping experience, access to airline content, and differentiation of airline products and services. Icelandair’s use of NDC will help broaden the airline’s reach, giving travel sellers full access to its content and fares. That’ll also help the carrier connect with new customer segments.

Indulge in Downtown Portland’s dining scene with these standout spots
Be ravenous in the Rose City
Portland, Oregon

Portland has long been known for its food scene. It's a circuit worth salivating over, but downtown, especially as of late, has mostly been left out. And to overlook the Rose City's central area is to forego truly exceptional meals, as capable as some of the best restaurants in America.

By all means, check out the city's vast number of neighborhoods — all with scores of esteemed eateries. But don't leave out downtown Portland restaurants, because while it may feel like other cities on the surface — the buildings, the chain establishments, the occasional unsavory character — there's too much flavor not to visit.

Inside Big Bend National Park
Adventure awaits at Big Bend National Park in southwest Texas
Chihuahuan Mountain Range at Big Bend National Park

Despite being larger than Rhode Island at 1,252 square miles, Big Bend National Park only sees about 500,000 visitors per year due to its remote location. Nestled in a remote corner of southwest Texas, this national park has so much to see, from the Rio Grande to dinosaur fossils and hot springs.

One interesting part about Big Bend is that it combines three unique ecosystems in one place: the Chihuahuan Desert, where you can see sand dunes, cacti, and rock formations, the Chisos Mountains, which are full of forests, and the Rio Grande, which carves towering canyons. Here, you'll also see some of the best stargazing in the entire world.
